Thick Black Glasses

Just recently realised I have a thing for thick black glasses. Elvis Costello, Lisa Loeb, Tim Burton (love their stuff) - not only are they incredibly talented and cool BUT they also all have something in common. You guessed it – thick black glasses. AND they all inspire me no end. Now I’m becoming obsessed with the idea of doing a series of sketches or paintings based on this theme. I’ve also just realised that 2 of my favourite sketches stuck on the walls of my studio are in fact wearing… yep! Watch this space – there are lots of big faces with thick black glasses filling my head – lots of black charcoal dust will be floating around my studio soon…
Which reminds me – I seriously need to get my eyes checked. The Lisa Loeb look could work well for a self portrait?

And here's the first one - inspired by Elvis Costello (xo). Pastels on paper (on a sheet, on the floor, otherwise as I recently discovered, everything gets covered in fine dust... including my computer) - very messy but oh so much fun! Size is about 600 x 850mm... BIG.

And here's another one created the same day. If you think it looks like Tim Burton then you are correct (if not then its just a man wearing thick black glasses that sort of resembles a young Tim Burton... ish). Anyway, I think I'll just do one a day from now on - the second sketch lost something - could have been my enthusiasm. OR the fixative spray went to my head. Note to self: don't spray artwork until finished for the day...
